
Getting Your Custom Gallium Iodide UV Lamp Right
Most standard mercury vapor lamps just don’t cut it when you’re dealing with thick coatings or heavy pigments. They hit a wall. That’s why we build Gallium Iodide (GaI) lamps. They push the light toward longer wavelengths, which is a fancy way of saying the light actually makes it into the material instead of just bouncing off the surface. The science bit, kept simple. Usually, UV lamps peak at 254nm. We dope the arc with gallium to shift that peak toward the 300nm to 400nm range. Why does that matter? Because pigments that block shorter waves let these longer waves slide right through. You stop guessing if the bottom layer is dry and actually get a uniform cure all the way through. Heat and Hardware We use high-purity fused quartz for the envelope. It’s the only way to make sure you’re getting the most UV light possible. But here’s the thing: these lamps runhot. If you’re packing a lot of wattage into a small space, you’ve got to get your cooling right. If you don’t, the quartz can crack or your electrodes will burn out way too fast. We’ll work with you on the length and diameter so the lamp fits your reflectors perfectly. You want that light hitting the substrate exactly where it hits the conveyor. No wasted energy. Making it work in your shop We build these to be drop-in replacements. You send us your CAD drawings, and we’ll handle the pin configurations and end-caps. It just works. One heads-up, though: GaI lamps aren’t “instant-on.” They take a minute to hit full strength. You’ll need to factor that warm-up time into your line speed, otherwise, those first few parts of the run are going to be under-cured.
