
Why Gallium Iodide is the Secret to Better PCB Curing
We’ve spent a lot of time on the shop floor—visiting about 3,000 different printing and PCB plants—just to figure out why standard UV setups keep crashing and burning in high-volume runs. It usually comes down to a mismatch in the light. See, when you’re curing photoresist for PCBs, you need a very specific wavelength. Most standard mercury lamps just don’t hit the mark. That’s why we lean on Gallium Iodide (GaI) lamps instead. Getting the light right GaI lamps are different. They push the emission spectrum right into that 250nm to 350nm sweet spot. We tune these lamps so the UV energy actually gets deep into the photoresist without cooking the substrate. If your wavelength is even slightly off, you’re looking at a nightmare: either the curing is incomplete, or you get that annoying “bleeding” on the edges of your traces. We keep the peak emission tight so the whole process stays clean. Dealing with the heat Here’s the thing: high-intensity UV creates a lot of heat. A lot. If you don’t manage that thermal load, your bulbs will burn out way too fast. It’s a balancing act between your wattage and how fast your conveyor is moving. Sure, a higher wattage lamp lets you speed up the line, but it puts a massive strain on your cooling fans. If your cooling isn’t up to the task, the quartz envelope will stress out and eventually crack. Not a great day for anyone. Setting it up (and keeping it running) We designed these to be drop-in replacements. You shouldn’t have to rip out your entire UV tunnel or spend a fortune on machine overhauls just to upgrade. The wiring is pretty simple. But—and this is a big but—double-check your ballast. It has to match the lamp’s voltage and current exactly. If they aren’t in sync, the lamp will flicker or just die early. One last tip: don’t wait for the lamp to go dark to change it. The gallium output actually starts to dip long before the bulb physically burns out. Stick to a strict replacement schedule based on your hours, and you’ll avoid a lot of headaches.
