
Getting Your Textile Curing Right with High-Pressure Mercury Lamps
If you’re curing UV inks on fabric, you already know that high-pressure mercury lamps are the real heavy lifters here. They pump out a broad spectrum of UV radiation—mostly UVC and UVB—which is exactly what triggers the resins in your ink to harden. The tricky part? Textiles are porous. The ink sinks in. That’s why we build these tubes to handle a massive amount of energy. You need that punch to get through thick layers of ink so the cure happens all the way through, not just on the surface.
Power, Pressure, and the “Smudge Factor”
Here is the secret: it all comes down to the internal pressure of the mercury vapor. When we crank that pressure up, the spectral output gets more intense. Why does that matter to you? Because nobody wants to see smudged prints during the winding process. It’s a nightmare. We also focus heavily on keeping the arc stable. If the lamp flickers, you get those annoying curing streaks across the width of your fabric. We make sure that doesn’t happen.
Dealing with the Heat
These lamps runhot. Like, really hot. To handle that, we use high-purity fused quartz for the envelope. It lets the UV light pass through easily but doesn’t crack under the heat. But here’s the catch: your cooling system has to keep up. Whether you’re using air or water, it needs to match the lamp’s wattage. If your cooling is too weak, the quartz gets stressed. Then the lamp dies early. Simple as that.
Setting Up Your Line
Usually, these lamps sit in arrays inside a curing oven. We offer a few different end-cap options because a loose electrical connection is a disaster—it’ll arc and burn your socket right out. When you’re mapping out your line, pay close attention to the gap between the lamp and the fabric. Moving the lamp closer gives you more power, sure. But if you get too close, you risk scorching the fabric. It’s a balancing act. You’ve got to find that sweet spot between your line speed and the lamp’s output so the ink cures fully, but the fibers stay intact.
